ABIA: Otti Pushes for Tougher Drug Laws, Donates Vans to NDLEA

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has called for stricter

legislation against drug dealers, arguing that dismantling drug cartels is key to reducing crime.

Speaking at Government House, Umuahia, during a courtesy visit by the new NDLEA State Commandant, Mr. Joseph Owoputi, Otti said over 90% of crime is linked to drug abuse and urged the National Assembly to strengthen existing laws.

“We just need to crack the drug cartel. Once you deal with the source, crime disappears. Current laws are too lenient—mere counselling and rehabilitation are not enough punishment,” the Governor stated.

To boost NDLEA’s operations, Otti approved two brand-new Hilux vans and directed the repair of abandoned agency vehicles. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the fight against drug abuse in the state.

Commandant Owoputi, in his remarks, praised Otti as “a dependable ally” and reported that between June and August, the agency arrested 65 suspects, seized 82 kilograms of illicit substances, secured seven convictions, and placed 38 individuals in rehabilitation.

The meeting was attended by senior security aides and officials of the state government.
